2010 was the 3rd year that the SCCA Alabama Region and Atlanta Region co-sanctioned this Labor Day weekend event at Barber Motorsports Park.  The event keeps getting better and an SCCA official commented that it is one of the best organized SCCA events in the Nation.

Group 1 – Pro-IT – IT7, ITA, ITB, ITS, ITT, ITX, ISM

The Pro-IT race was the first race on Sunday morning.  Danny Steyn had2010-09-05 11.27.29 pole position, but lost the lead on lap 2 when Andrew Von Charbonneau and Matt Reppert got by him.  Von Charbonneau started in 6th position.  It remained Von Charbonneau, Reppert, and Steyn for 9 laps until Von Charbonneau pulled off the track exiting Turn 8 on lap 11.  It was reported that he had a broken throttle cable.  Reppert inherited the lead with Steyn behind him and they continued in that order until the end.  Steyn set a new track record with a time of 1:47.385.

Willie Phee took the lead in ITA on lap 2.  He lost the ITA lead to Joe Tenney on lap 6 but regained it the next lap and went on to win in ITA.

Garry Sharp was the only car in FST and finished 2nd overall on Saturday, but was penalized to 3rd in class.

Stevan Davis finished 3rd overall to win in FV, setting the track record with a time of 1:45.696.  Davis waived his SARRC points, so officially, the points for the win went to Sherman Engler.

Clint McMahan led the first 8 laps of Sunday’s race, but was not shown scored on the lap chart after lap 8.  He was penalized and his finishing points were disallowed.  Not sure why this was.  If anyone knows, please let us know in the comments section below.

Davis took the FV win again on Sunday by winning the race overall.  Again he waived the SARRC points.  Sherman Engler finished 2nd overall and again received the points for the FV win.

Group 5 – SM, SM2, SSM

Todd Buras (#78) and Cliff Brown (#08) started Saturday’s race on the front row with Buras2010-09-04 15.44.30 on pole.  Jeff LaBounty (#0) started from the 5th position.  By the end of the 1st lap LaBounty was in 2nd place ahead of Buras, with Brown leading.  These drivers were the top 3 for the rest of the race.  Buras moved ahead of LaBounty on lap 4 and then ahead of Brown into the lead on lap 5.  For 7 laps it was Buras, Brown, then LaBounty.  On lap 13 LaBounty got by Brown for 2nd and that’s the way they finished overall and for the SM class.

Patrick Sandlin set the SSM track record (1:49.828) on his way to an SSM win and 7th overall finish.

Jacob Sellers took the SM2 win, but Robert Roland set the SM2 track record with a 1:51.307.

On Sunday Danny Steyn had pole position, but Cliff Brown had the lead at the end of lap 1.  Buras took the lead on lap 4 and led until the checkered flag for his 2nd SM and overall win of the weekend.

Jacob Sellers won in SM2 again and beat Robert Roland’s time from the previous day to set a new track record with a 1:51.144.

Ron Hlozansky took the SSM class win.

Group 6 – FP, HP, ITB, ITC, ITT, SSB, SSC, STU

Randy Wagner had the pole for Saturday’s race with Joao de Barros on the front row next to him.  Joao de Barros took the lead at the drop of the green flag and never looked back.  He led every lap to take the overall win and STU win with a margin of victory of 15 seconds.  Wagner finished 2nd overall and was the FP class winner.

Len Hoffman had the pole for Sunday’s race and again Joao de Barros was 2nd 2010-09-05 16.18.05on the grid and again he grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and led to the end.  Hoffman dropped to 3rd behind Randy Wagner.  Hoffman was able to get by Wagner on lap 9.  Wagner had to follow a smoking Hoffman for the final 6 laps.  It’s amazing Hoffman was able to finish, but maybe the smoke screen helped to keep Wagner behind him.

Group 7 – ASR, CSR, DSR, FA, FB, FC, FE, FM, FS, S2

Jason Barfield had pole position for Saturday’s shortened race and led every lap to take the overall and DSR win.  He also set the DSR track record with a 1:23.844.  I say shortened because the race was black flagged early and2010-09-04 18.10.03 resumed to complete only 8 laps total.  I assume it was black flagged due to an incident involving #20 Jerry Freeman.  If anyone knows the details of the incident please comment at the end of this post.  Barfield waived his SARRC points, officially giving the DSR win to Craig Farr.

Glenn Cooper (aka Giancarlo Di Coopola) was the FB winner finishing 2nd overall and setting the FB track record with a 1:26.121.

Keith Roberts and James Johnston Sr. battled for 3rd overall with Roberts taking the 3rd position on the track, but he was penalized 1 position in class, which dropped him to 3rd in FB and 16th overall.  James Johnston Sr. had the FA win anyway, but was gifted the 3rd overall position.

Barfield again had pole position and led every lap to win in Sunday’s race.  He waived SARRC points for this race also.  Keith Roberts ran 2nd the entire race except at the checkered flag.  James Johnston Sr. got by him on the last lap for 2nd overall, also winning in FA.  Roberts won in FB and beat Glenn Coopers track record from the previous day with a 1:25.995

Group 8 – AS, GT1, GT2, GTA, ITO, SPO, ST, STO, T1

Before the race started on Saturday it was announced that it would be shortened to 10 laps or 20 minutes due to the delay in the Group 7 race.  I believe Barber Motorsports Park has a “hard stop” at 5:00 p.m.

The starting grid was Bob Mayer on pole, Bill Smith, and Clint Thomas.  Bill Smith jumped to the lead immediately and led the first 5 laps.  Clint Thomas moved into the lead by lap 6 and led the final 5 laps to take the overall and SPO win.  Smith finished 2nd overall and 2nd in SPO and Mayer finished 3rd overall, winning in STO.

Track records were set by Bob Humphreys in GT2 with a 1:37.355, Bobby Reuse in GTA with a 1:37.841, Clint Thomas in SPO with a 1:34.910, and David Daniel in ITO with a 1:41.712.

2010-09-05 17.15.37Mayer and Smith were on the front row again for Sunday’s race and had a great battle throughout the race, swapping the lead several times and passing each other on the front straight.  Mayer came out on top for the STO and overall win.  He also set the STO track record with a 1:35.768.

Group 1 – IT7, ITA, ITR, ITS, SP2, SP3

In Saturday’s action, Kip Van Steenburg had pole position and led every lap to win in ITR and overall in Group 1.  Kip is the defending ARRC and SARRC champion in ITR.

Tim Pruitt started 3rd, but had a bad start and dropped to 5th.  He worked his way back to finish 2nd overall and win in SP2.  Along the way he set the new track record for SP2 with a 1:44.378, but that didn’t last long.

Zsolt Ferenczy grabbed the lead in ITS on the first lap, but his day was done by the end of lap 2 after pitting with a problem.  This gave the lead to Chuck Hines and he was into 2nd overall by lap 4 and remained there until lap 14.  Hines spun on lap 14 at Turn 7 giving the ITS lead to Harold Corbin, but on the last lap they were side by side through 11 and 12 with Hines edging out Corbin for the ITS win.  This was the best battle in Group 1 on Saturday.

Although Jon Gearhart did not finish on Saturday he did set the track record for SP3 with a 1:42.703.

The group 1 race on Sunday was exciting with 4 of the 6 classes having close battles to the finish.  Kip Van Steenburg’s ITR and overall win wasn’t one of them.  Again he led every lap from pole position with a margin of victory of more than 40 seconds.  2010-07-18 12.46.58

Tim Pruitt (#32) and Joe Crowell (#72) started 6th and 7th respectively and worked there way up to battle for 2nd overall and the lead in SP2 by lap 10.  Pruitt passed Crowell several times going into Turn 1 but couldn’t hang onto the SP2 lead where it counted, at the finish line.  Crowell led in SP2 and was 2nd overall for the last 6 laps at the finish line.

Hines, Kim, FerenczyChuck Hines (#50), Zsolt Ferenczy (#9), and David Kim (#27) battled for the ITS win with Hines leading Ferenczy and Kim on laps 12 and 13.  Kim got by Ferenczy on lap 14.   On the last lap and last turn Kim and Ferenczy passed Hines for 1st and 2nd in ITS.

Neal Harrison inherited the ITA win after Russell Boatwright and Stephen Patterson spun off into the gravel on separate laps about mid-race.

Case Crowell beat Tim Pruitt’s lap record in SP2, set the previous day, by .4s with a 1:43.971.  Case led SP2 for the first 10 laps before coming into the pits from the lead.

Group 2 – AS, GT1, GT2, GT3, GTA, ITO, SPO, ST, STO, T1

Group 2, also know as the “Ground Pounders”, not only is a race for the SARRC championship, but drivers will also be competing in the V8 Stock Car Championship.

In Saturday’s race Paul Breehne had a great start and jumped into the lead over Larry Hoopaugh and David Machavern from his 3rd place starting position.  Hoopaugh was able to get by Breehne on lap 2. Then it appeared Charles Wicht made contact with Breehne causing him to spin and hit the wall on driver’s left on the front straight.  Wicht would have started on the front row after taking pole for GT1, but was penalized and moved to 10th on the grid for passing under a yellow during qualifying.  After the incident with Breehne, Wicht was shown in 2nd place at the end of lap 2.  Wicht took the lead on lap 10 and continued on to take the overall and GT1 win.

Saturday was a good day for Larry Hoopaugh.  He led overall for a majority of the laps, took the win in SPO, and proposed to his girlfriend Melinda; and she said yes.  Unfortunately he didn’t finish on Sunday.

Charles Wicht was able to score the double win with his overall and class win again on Sunday.  Paul Breehne was able to comeback from his crash on Saturday and take the SPO class win in his ex-Roush Ford Fusion.

On Saturday Craig Foster had pole position and he and Dave Colledge battled for the overall and SM win throughout the race with 5 official lead changes at the line.  Foster led laps 8 through 14, but on the checkered flag lap Colledge took the lead going into Turn 1.  At the end of the lap Foster and Colledge were side by side through Turn 11.  Foster made an attempt on the outside of Turn 12, but Colledge was able to hold on for the win.

This weekend was the debut of Spec Miata 2 (SM2), Atlanta Region’s regional only class for all 1990 – 1997 Mazda Miatas.  Karl Fischer started 17th on the grid and worked his way up to 5th overall to take the inaugural win of SM2 on Saturday.

Will Perry was the only driver of the group to win his class (ITC) in both races of the weekend.2010-07-18 14.10.47

Craig Foster (#4) again had pole for Sunday’s race and led the first 11 laps, but George Fusner (#06) took the lead on lap 12 and went on to win in SM and overall.  Dave Colledge (Saturday’s winner) started on the front row, but spun on the first lap.  He recovered to finish 4th in SM and overall.

2010-07-18 14.21.51 Karl Fischer (#07) led SM2 most of the race while battling Mike Cottrell (#99) for 3rd overall.  Cottrell setup Fischer for an awesome pass, getting inside Fischer at the apex of Turn 7 and powered away down the back straight.  Unfortunately the battle ended a couple of laps later when Fischer pulled off at Turn 8, giving the SM2 lead and win to Jacob Sellers.

Group 4 – CF, F5, F6, FC, FF, FST, FV

Ken Waters had pole position for Saturday’s race and led the first lap, but spun out of the FC and overall lead at Turn 10 on the 2nd lap.  John Benson inherited the lead in his Swift DB1 and led the remaining 14 laps to win in FF and overall.  Brian Willis inherited the FC lead when Waters spun and Waters continued in 2nd in FC.  On lap 5 Willis spun and got stuck in the gravel at Turn 6 and Waters spun again.  This brought out a full course caution.  When the race resumed Rich LaTerra was the only FC car remaining to take the class win and finish 2nd overall.

Sunday’s race was shortened by 3 laps due to rain.  The weather had been perfect until then, but the clouds started moving in Sunday afternoon.  John Benson was lucky to make Sunday’s race as he crashed heavily in the morning qualifying session, but the car was repaired and he started 9th.  By lap 2 he was in the lead.  On lap 4 he spun in Turn 7 giving the lead back to Steve Robertson, but took the lead again on lap 5.  He continued to win in FF and overall.

Group 5 – EP, FP, GTL, HP, SPU, SRF, STU, SSB, SSC, T2, T3

Jim Kellogg had pole position and led every lap to win in SPU and overall in Saturday’s race.  Bill Sturgeon ran every lap in 2nd overall to win in EP.

Sunday’s race was delayed to wait for the rainstorm to pass that 2010-07-18 15.18.11shortened the Group 4 race.  This picture, taken just before Turn 3, shows how much water was on the track.  The race was started with standing water reported to be at Turns 4, 10a, and 12.

Jim Kellogg had pole position again, but came into the pits at the end of lap 1.  This gave the lead to Frank Severino in SRF who led every lap to win in class and overall.  Kellogg rejoined the race and was able to win in SPU, as his nearest competitor, Fletcher Williams, also had to pit and later had a spin.

On Saturday, Jim Dixon and Paul Schneider started 1st and 2nd respectively and ran in that order for every lap to take the FS and FE wins.

Dixon and Schneider had the same grid positions on Sunday, but they didn’t keep those positions throughout the race.  Dixon led every lap except the first 2, which Schneider led.  Then Schneider ran 2nd overall the rest of the race until the last lap, when David Clarke grabbed 2nd overall.  All three won in their class.

Group 7 – Pro IT – IT7, ITA, ITB, ITS, ITT, ITX, ISM

Matt Reppert (#18 ITS), David Kim (#27 ITS), and Mark Pombo (SM) started the2010-07-17 17.05.21_02 Safe-Quip Pro IT race in 1st through 3rd grid positions and pretty much dominated the top 3 positions with the exception of the first three laps when Case Crowell (#92 ITX) moved into 3rd, then 2nd, then the lead; only to pit with a broken exhaust.

Reppert and Kim exchanged the lead 3 times with Kim taking the lead for good 2010-07-17 17.12.20on lap 11 of the 26 lap race.  Reppert finished 2nd in ITS and overall, and Pombo finished 1st in SM and 3rd overall, but was penalized for a missing sponsor decal and was moved to 3rd in class.  This gave the SM win to Craig Foster.

Butch Kummer2010 was Alabama and Atlanta Regions’ third year of co-sanctioning the Labor Day Double SARRC at Barber Motorsports Park and the event just keeps on getting better.  The overall attendance continues to climb, we’ve worked out a lot of the operational procedures with both the track and Alabama Region, and there’s an excellent chance we’ll host the weekend again in 2011.  And even though the track is STILL not among my favorites I found it more attractive than the last time I ran there in 2007.

Short story – second (of five) in GTA and ninth overall on Saturday, first in GTA (fourth overall) and our best laps ever on Sunday, and we extended our lead in the 2010 SARRC GTA points battle.  We also loaded a running race car in the trailer at the end of the weekend which means we have a minimum amount of prep work to be ready for Watkins Glen the weekend of Sept 17-19.  Despite all those successes, however, the major theme of this story can best be summarized as “New Beginnings”.

And, as always, here’s the longer story:
