July 17 – 18, 2010
In Saturday’s action, Kip Van Steenburg had pole position and led every lap to win in ITR and overall in Group 1. Kip is the defending ARRC and SARRC champion in ITR.
Tim Pruitt started 3rd, but had a bad start and dropped to 5th. He worked his way back to finish 2nd overall and win in SP2. Along the way he set the new track record for SP2 with a 1:44.378, but that didn’t last long.
Zsolt Ferenczy grabbed the lead in ITS on the first lap, but his day was done by the end of lap 2 after pitting with a problem. This gave the lead to Chuck Hines and he was into 2nd overall by lap 4 and remained there until lap 14. Hines spun on lap 14 at Turn 7 giving the ITS lead to Harold Corbin, but on the last lap they were side by side through 11 and 12 with Hines edging out Corbin for the ITS win. This was the best battle in Group 1 on Saturday.
Although Jon Gearhart did not finish on Saturday he did set the track record for SP3 with a 1:42.703.
The group 1 race on Sunday was exciting with 4 of the 6 classes having close battles to the finish. Kip Van Steenburg’s ITR and overall win wasn’t one of them. Again he led every lap from pole position with a margin of victory of more than 40 seconds.
Tim Pruitt (#32) and Joe Crowell (#72) started 6th and 7th respectively and worked there way up to battle for 2nd overall and the lead in SP2 by lap 10. Pruitt passed Crowell several times going into Turn 1 but couldn’t hang onto the SP2 lead where it counted, at the finish line. Crowell led in SP2 and was 2nd overall for the last 6 laps at the finish line.
Chuck Hines (#50), Zsolt Ferenczy (#9), and David Kim (#27) battled for the ITS win with Hines leading Ferenczy and Kim on laps 12 and 13. Kim got by Ferenczy on lap 14. On the last lap and last turn Kim and Ferenczy passed Hines for 1st and 2nd in ITS.
Neal Harrison inherited the ITA win after Russell Boatwright and Stephen Patterson spun off into the gravel on separate laps about mid-race.
Case Crowell beat Tim Pruitt’s lap record in SP2, set the previous day, by .4s with a 1:43.971. Case led SP2 for the first 10 laps before coming into the pits from the lead.

Group 2, also know as the “Ground Pounders”, not only is a race for the SARRC championship, but drivers will also be competing in the V8 Stock Car Championship.
In Saturday’s race Paul Breehne had a great start and jumped into the lead over Larry Hoopaugh and David Machavern from his 3rd place starting position. Hoopaugh was able to get by Breehne on lap 2. Then it appeared Charles Wicht made contact with Breehne causing him to spin and hit the wall on driver’s left on the front straight. Wicht would have started on the front row after taking pole for GT1, but was penalized and moved to 10th on the grid for passing under a yellow during qualifying. After the incident with Breehne, Wicht was shown in 2nd place at the end of lap 2. Wicht took the lead on lap 10 and continued on to take the overall and GT1 win.
Saturday was a good day for Larry Hoopaugh. He led overall for a majority of the laps, took the win in SPO, and proposed to his girlfriend Melinda; and she said yes. Unfortunately he didn’t finish on Sunday.
Charles Wicht was able to score the double win with his overall and class win again on Sunday. Paul Breehne was able to comeback from his crash on Saturday and take the SPO class win in his ex-Roush Ford Fusion.

On Saturday Craig Foster had pole position and he and Dave Colledge battled for the overall and SM win throughout the race with 5 official lead changes at the line. Foster led laps 8 through 14, but on the checkered flag lap Colledge took the lead going into Turn 1. At the end of the lap Foster and Colledge were side by side through Turn 11. Foster made an attempt on the outside of Turn 12, but Colledge was able to hold on for the win.
This weekend was the debut of Spec Miata 2 (SM2), Atlanta Region’s regional only class for all 1990 – 1997 Mazda Miatas. Karl Fischer started 17th on the grid and worked his way up to 5th overall to take the inaugural win of SM2 on Saturday.
Will Perry was the only driver of the group to win his class (ITC) in both races of the weekend.
Craig Foster (#4) again had pole for Sunday’s race and led the first 11 laps, but George Fusner (#06) took the lead on lap 12 and went on to win in SM and overall. Dave Colledge (Saturday’s winner) started on the front row, but spun on the first lap. He recovered to finish 4th in SM and overall.
Karl Fischer (#07) led SM2 most of the race while battling Mike Cottrell (#99) for 3rd overall. Cottrell setup Fischer for an awesome pass, getting inside Fischer at the apex of Turn 7 and powered away down the back straight. Unfortunately the battle ended a couple of laps later when Fischer pulled off at Turn 8, giving the SM2 lead and win to Jacob Sellers.

Ken Waters had pole position for Saturday’s race and led the first lap, but spun out of the FC and overall lead at Turn 10 on the 2nd lap. John Benson inherited the lead in his Swift DB1 and led the remaining 14 laps to win in FF and overall. Brian Willis inherited the FC lead when Waters spun and Waters continued in 2nd in FC. On lap 5 Willis spun and got stuck in the gravel at Turn 6 and Waters spun again. This brought out a full course caution. When the race resumed Rich LaTerra was the only FC car remaining to take the class win and finish 2nd overall.
Sunday’s race was shortened by 3 laps due to rain. The weather had been perfect until then, but the clouds started moving in Sunday afternoon. John Benson was lucky to make Sunday’s race as he crashed heavily in the morning qualifying session, but the car was repaired and he started 9th. By lap 2 he was in the lead. On lap 4 he spun in Turn 7 giving the lead back to Steve Robertson, but took the lead again on lap 5. He continued to win in FF and overall.

Jim Kellogg had pole position and led every lap to win in SPU and overall in Saturday’s race. Bill Sturgeon ran every lap in 2nd overall to win in EP.
Sunday’s race was delayed to wait for the rainstorm to pass that
shortened the Group 4 race. This picture, taken just before Turn 3, shows how much water was on the track. The race was started with standing water reported to be at Turns 4, 10a, and 12.
Jim Kellogg had pole position again, but came into the pits at the end of lap 1. This gave the lead to Frank Severino in SRF who led every lap to win in class and overall. Kellogg rejoined the race and was able to win in SPU, as his nearest competitor, Fletcher Williams, also had to pit and later had a spin.

On Saturday, Jim Dixon and Paul Schneider started 1st and 2nd respectively and ran in that order for every lap to take the FS and FE wins.
Dixon and Schneider had the same grid positions on Sunday, but they didn’t keep those positions throughout the race. Dixon led every lap except the first 2, which Schneider led. Then Schneider ran 2nd overall the rest of the race until the last lap, when David Clarke grabbed 2nd overall. All three won in their class.

Matt Reppert (#18 ITS), David Kim (#27 ITS), and Mark Pombo (SM) started the
Safe-Quip Pro IT race in 1st through 3rd grid positions and pretty much dominated the top 3 positions with the exception of the first three laps when Case Crowell (#92 ITX) moved into 3rd, then 2nd, then the lead; only to pit with a broken exhaust.
Reppert and Kim exchanged the lead 3 times with Kim taking the lead for good
on lap 11 of the 26 lap race. Reppert finished 2nd in ITS and overall, and Pombo finished 1st in SM and 3rd overall, but was penalized for a missing sponsor decal and was moved to 3rd in class. This gave the SM win to Craig Foster.
