Alabama & Atlanta Region SCCA Double SARRC and Pro IT at Barber Motorsports Park

September 3 – 5, 2010
2010 was the 3rd year that the SCCA Alabama Region and Atlanta Region co-sanctioned this Labor Day weekend event at Barber Motorsports Park. The event keeps getting better and an SCCA official commented that it is one of the best organized SCCA events in the Nation.
Group 1 – Pro-IT – IT7, ITA, ITB, ITS, ITT, ITX, ISM
The Pro-IT race was the first race on Sunday morning. Danny Steyn had
pole position, but lost the lead on lap 2 when Andrew Von Charbonneau and Matt Reppert got by him. Von Charbonneau started in 6th position. It remained Von Charbonneau, Reppert, and Steyn for 9 laps until Von Charbonneau pulled off the track exiting Turn 8 on lap 11. It was reported that he had a broken throttle cable. Reppert inherited the lead with Steyn behind him and they continued in that order until the end. Steyn set a new track record with a time of 1:47.385.
Willie Phee took the lead in ITA on lap 2. He lost the ITA lead to Joe Tenney on lap 6 but regained it the next lap and went on to win in ITA.

Group 2 – CF, F5, F6, FF, FST, FV
Steve Robertson had the only car in CF and led every lap to win overall and in CF on Saturday. He did not contest the race on Sunday.
Garry Sharp was the only car in FST and finished 2nd overall on Saturday, but was penalized to 3rd in class.
Stevan Davis finished 3rd overall to win in FV, setting the track record with a time of 1:45.696. Davis waived his SARRC points, so officially, the points for the win went to Sherman Engler.
Clint McMahan led the first 8 laps of Sunday’s race, but was not shown scored on the lap chart after lap 8. He was penalized and his finishing points were disallowed. Not sure why this was. If anyone knows, please let us know in the comments section below.
Davis took the FV win again on Sunday by winning the race overall. Again he waived the SARRC points. Sherman Engler finished 2nd overall and again received the points for the FV win.

Group 3 – IT7, ITA, ITR, ITS, SP2, SP3
Harold Corbin had pole position for Saturday’s race in his BMW 325is, but dropped to 3rd by the end of lap 1. He eventually finished 8th overall.
Ricky Thompson had a great start, moving into 2nd from his 6th place starting position by the end of the first lap. He took the lead from Andrew Von Charbonneau on lap 3 and went on to win overall and in ITR. Von Charbonneau finished 2nd overall, winning in ITS.
Chuck Baader had pole position for Sunday’s race, but Von Charbonneau led every lap to win ITS and overall. Ricky Thompson moved into 2nd from his 5th place starting position by lap 2 and went on to finish 2nd overall and win in ITR. Baader won in ITA, finishing 3rd overall.
Gary Wilson started on the last row, but worked his way up to 12 overall to win in IT7.

Group 4 – EP, GT3, GTL, SPU, SRF, T2, T3
Jeff Dernehl had pole position for Saturday’s race and led every lap to win overall and the GT3 class, and in the process set the GT3 track record with a 1:40.891.
Jim Kellogg ran every lap in 2nd overall to win in SPU. Fletcher Williams started in 18th and finished 2nd in SPU and 3rd overall.
Bill Sturgeon started 3rd overall, but finished 5th overall to win in EP.
Clark Crawford set a new track record for T2 with a 1:47.660 and James Nealon set a new record for GTL with a 1:53.372.
Dernehl and Kellogg swapped positions on Sunday, with Kellog taking the overall win and Dernehl finishing 2nd overall. Fletcher Williams led the first 2 laps but dropped out on the 3rd lap with a wheel bearing failure.
Dernehl waived the SARCC points, allowing Jack Smith to collect the 1st place points for GT3.
Dernehl and Nealon reset there track records from the previous day with Dernehl setting a time of 1:40.517 and Nealon clocking in at 1:48.186.

Group 5 – SM, SM2, SSM
Todd Buras (#78) and Cliff Brown (#08) started Saturday’s race on the front row with Buras
on pole. Jeff LaBounty (#0) started from the 5th position. By the end of the 1st lap LaBounty was in 2nd place ahead of Buras, with Brown leading. These drivers were the top 3 for the rest of the race. Buras moved ahead of LaBounty on lap 4 and then ahead of Brown into the lead on lap 5. For 7 laps it was Buras, Brown, then LaBounty. On lap 13 LaBounty got by Brown for 2nd and that’s the way they finished overall and for the SM class.
Patrick Sandlin set the SSM track record (1:49.828) on his way to an SSM win and 7th overall finish.
Jacob Sellers took the SM2 win, but Robert Roland set the SM2 track record with a 1:51.307.
On Sunday Danny Steyn had pole position, but Cliff Brown had the lead at the end of lap 1. Buras took the lead on lap 4 and led until the checkered flag for his 2nd SM and overall win of the weekend.
Jacob Sellers won in SM2 again and beat Robert Roland’s time from the previous day to set a new track record with a 1:51.144.
Ron Hlozansky took the SSM class win.

Group 6 – FP, HP, ITB, ITC, ITT, SSB, SSC, STU
Randy Wagner had the pole for Saturday’s race with Joao de Barros on the front row next to him. Joao de Barros took the lead at the drop of the green flag and never looked back. He led every lap to take the overall win and STU win with a margin of victory of 15 seconds. Wagner finished 2nd overall and was the FP class winner.
Len Hoffman had the pole for Sunday’s race and again Joao de Barros was 2nd 
on the grid and again he grabbed the lead at the drop of the green and led to the end. Hoffman dropped to 3rd behind Randy Wagner. Hoffman was able to get by Wagner on lap 9. Wagner had to follow a smoking Hoffman for the final 6 laps. It’s amazing Hoffman was able to finish, but maybe the smoke screen helped to keep Wagner behind him.

Group 7 – ASR, CSR, DSR, FA, FB, FC, FE, FM, FS, S2
Jason Barfield had pole position for Saturday’s shortened race and led every lap to take the overall and DSR win. He also set the DSR track record with a 1:23.844. I say shortened because the race was black flagged early and
resumed to complete only 8 laps total. I assume it was black flagged due to an incident involving #20 Jerry Freeman. If anyone knows the details of the incident please comment at the end of this post. Barfield waived his SARRC points, officially giving the DSR win to Craig Farr.
Glenn Cooper (aka Giancarlo Di Coopola) was the FB winner finishing 2nd overall and setting the FB track record with a 1:26.121.
Keith Roberts and James Johnston Sr. battled for 3rd overall with Roberts taking the 3rd position on the track, but he was penalized 1 position in class, which dropped him to 3rd in FB and 16th overall. James Johnston Sr. had the FA win anyway, but was gifted the 3rd overall position.
Barfield again had pole position and led every lap to win in Sunday’s race. He waived SARRC points for this race also. Keith Roberts ran 2nd the entire race except at the checkered flag. James Johnston Sr. got by him on the last lap for 2nd overall, also winning in FA. Roberts won in FB and beat Glenn Coopers track record from the previous day with a 1:25.995

Group 8 – AS, GT1, GT2, GTA, ITO, SPO, ST, STO, T1
Before the race started on Saturday it was announced that it would be shortened to 10 laps or 20 minutes due to the delay in the Group 7 race. I believe Barber Motorsports Park has a “hard stop” at 5:00 p.m.
The starting grid was Bob Mayer on pole, Bill Smith, and Clint Thomas. Bill Smith jumped to the lead immediately and led the first 5 laps. Clint Thomas moved into the lead by lap 6 and led the final 5 laps to take the overall and SPO win. Smith finished 2nd overall and 2nd in SPO and Mayer finished 3rd overall, winning in STO.
Track records were set by Bob Humphreys in GT2 with a 1:37.355, Bobby Reuse in GTA with a 1:37.841, Clint Thomas in SPO with a 1:34.910, and David Daniel in ITO with a 1:41.712.
Mayer and Smith were on the front row again for Sunday’s race and had a great battle throughout the race, swapping the lead several times and passing each other on the front straight. Mayer came out on top for the STO and overall win. He also set the STO track record with a 1:35.768.

BK Racing Update – Barber Motorsport Park

2010 was Alabama and Atlanta Regions’ third year of co-sanctioning the Labor Day Double SARRC at Barber Motorsports Park and the event just keeps on getting better. The overall attendance continues to climb, we’ve worked out a lot of the operational procedures with both the track and Alabama Region, and there’s an excellent chance we’ll host the weekend again in 2011. And even though the track is STILL not among my favorites I found it more attractive than the last time I ran there in 2007.
Short story – second (of five) in GTA and ninth overall on Saturday, first in GTA (fourth overall) and our best laps ever on Sunday, and we extended our lead in the 2010 SARRC GTA points battle. We also loaded a running race car in the trailer at the end of the weekend which means we have a minimum amount of prep work to be ready for Watkins Glen the weekend of Sept 17-19. Despite all those successes, however, the major theme of this story can best be summarized as “New Beginnings”.
